Murder Mysteries privacy policy

Published by Jordy de Koning. This page describes data handling for the iOS app and the sponsor submission form on this website.

Playing offline

Murder Mysteries is a logic game that can be played offline. Cases, progress and settings are kept on your device. You do not need an account. Puzzle contents, statements and your answers are not sent to the analytics service.

Optional analytics

Analytics is off by default. You can turn it on or off in the app’s Settings. When enabled, the app sends small batches of event counts to jordydekoning.com: app opens, cases started, cases solved, solutions revealed, sponsor card views and sponsor link taps. A case event may include its difficulty, and a sponsor event may include the campaign’s public ID.

These requests do not include advertising IDs, device IDs, user IDs, session IDs, puzzle contents or free-text answers. Pending counts are kept in memory, are not saved as an event queue, and are cleared when you turn analytics off. Requests are best effort and are not retried.

The analytics counters store daily totals by event name. They do not contain individual events, difficulty or sponsor breakdowns, IP addresses or device identifiers. Counters older than 90 UTC days are removed when a new batch is recorded. Public totals cover today and the previous 29 UTC dates. They count actions, not unique people or installs, and are never used for billing.

Sponsor cards

When online, the Home screen may load a manually approved, clearly labeled sponsor card from jordydekoning.com, including an image hosted on the same website. This can happen with analytics turned off. There is no behavioral targeting or cross-app tracking, and no ads appear while you are solving a case. A network connection is not required to play.

Opening a sponsor link launches your browser and visits the advertiser’s website. That website has its own privacy policy. The app does not attach a user or device identifier to the link.

Network infrastructure

Any network request necessarily shares technical connection information, including your IP address, with the receiving website and its hosting infrastructure. This applies to sponsor requests, image downloads, enabled analytics and visits to this website. Hosting and security systems may process technical request data independently of the aggregate analytics database. The app does not add persistent identifiers to these requests.

Other pages on the developer website and advertiser websites also involve the data handling of those websites and their service providers.

Support and sponsor enquiries

If you email hello@jordydekoning.com, your email provider and mine process the message and address. I use your message to respond to your request or manage a proposed sponsorship. Please send only information needed for your enquiry.

Advertiser submissions and payments

The sponsor form collects your logo, ad title or name, short description and destination URL. The server generates a private draft reference and stores the text, image object key, submission date and review/payment state in a separate advertiser database. Your raster logo is checked, decoded and re-encoded as WebP with metadata removed. It is stored privately in DigitalOcean Spaces for review. Original filenames and original image metadata are not retained.

After saving the draft, the website sends you to the supplied Stripe Payment Link with the draft reference. Stripe processes contact, payment and billing information under its own privacy policy. This website does not receive card numbers. Payment is checked manually in Stripe before approval; where signed webhook confirmation is configured, private records also contain Stripe checkout and event IDs, the amount, currency, payment status, an optional subscription ID and relevant dates. These advertiser records are separate from anonymous app counters and are not used to identify players.

Unapproved drafts and logos are not published by the sponsor feed or image endpoint. After manual approval, the agreed title, description, logo and destination become public. Payment alone never publishes an ad. Creative suitability, availability and placement dates require manual agreement.

Incomplete uploads and abandoned unpaid drafts are reviewed for cleanup. The operator cleanup tool considers incomplete drafts after one day and unpaid drafts after 90 days, after checking Stripe for payment or an open payment attempt. It excludes approved creatives and recorded payment history. Advertiser and financial records needed to manage a sponsorship, payment dispute or accounting obligation are retained for those purposes and reviewed separately. Contact me to ask about your submission, removal, payment or subscription cancellation.

Your choices and contact

You can play offline, leave analytics disabled, disable it at any time, and choose whether to open sponsor links. Local data can be removed by deleting the app. Because aggregate counters contain no user identifier, an individual person’s contribution cannot be identified within the totals.

For privacy questions, contact Jordy de Koning at hello@jordydekoning.com. This page will be updated if the app’s data handling changes.
